SUNS ready to rumble
Jackson Allen and his teammates sweated it out for almost an hour this morning during a high-intensity boxing session at Metricon Stadium.
Under the tutelage of GC SUNS Wrestling and Boxing Coach – Justin Dee, the group of players completed the high-tempo training designed to physically and mentally test each player’s aerobic and endurance capacity.
Following the challenging session, an exhausted Allen told goldcoastfc.com.au that the high tempo workout provided the players an ideal opportunity to work on their footwork without the need to run.
“Justin had us doing some simple slips between our partners where we dodged a few punches as well as counter-acted with a few of our own,” said Allen.
Having never worn a pair of gloves prior to his arrival at the GC SUNS, Allen said the weekly cardio session with the boxing pads had boosted his confidence not only in the ring but also on-field during match-days.
“It’s great because it definitely helps with being able to take a few knocks, which of course is needed for every player in today’s game.”
With the GC SUNS coaching staff eager to build confidence amongst the playing group ahead of the side’s season opener against St. Kilda, Allen said the team would be highly motivated towards registering the win over the Demons in the NAB Cup Challenge.
Allen believes it all starts with the player’s efforts around the ground.
“We definitely need to make sure we produce a four quarter effort against the Demons this Saturday,” Allen said.
“There’s been a few lapses throughout our games this pre-season where just for a quarter or so we’d dropped off and given them an early start and subsequently have had to chase from behind, so the boys will definitely be looking to put together a four-quarter effort and keep the ball down our end more.”
