The Gold Coast SUNS have secured two excting young players at tonights AFL Draft held on the Gold Coast.

Exciting Tasmanian Jesse Lonergan was the first to have his name read out, the medium sized midfielder selected with his new clubs opening selection of the night, pick number 13.

List Manager Scott Clayton saying the GC SUNS had got their man with Lonergan set to join his new team mates for pre-season training in the next week, Clayton adding that he felt the Clubs new recruit could taste AFL football in 2013.

"Yeah really happy, obviously they are two that we really liked, Jesse Lonergan at pick 13, when he was there there was no choice but to take him, we are really pleased that he got through to that and pleased that we got him, he's a very competitive, combative player who's had a bit of a setback this year with a bit of a knee injury, but recovered, worked really hard, was in the AIS academy that toured Europe."

"He has great quality tackles and bursts packs and great agility and speed and power who can go forward and kick some goals to."

While Clayton and the GC SUNS Coaching staff were pleased with the selection, Lonergan was ecstatic as he pulled on the Club colours for the first time.

"I don't know how to explain it really, just seeing my name up there on the board was amazing and I just cant wait to get up here and get stuck into it straight away and I know some of the other Tassie boys and I'm just excited to be honest with you."

Tim Sumner was the GC SUNS next selection at 55 with Clayton saying the Club had secured a multi talented athlete with plenty of potential.

"Tim Sumner has some X factor, a late pick we were certainly backing some upside, we back our young players and we were trying to get someone who has something a bit different, he can play forward and back and I have seen him take mark of the year, land like a cat and kick a great goal and then I have seen him play in defence and run it out and be very creative."

"He's young and needs to work hard, he's got a big change ahead of him and it's going to be exciting."

Tonights Draft signalled the end of a successful trade period for the Gold Coast SUNS with Greg Broughton and Tom Murphy joining the Club while talented rookie Kyal Horsley was promoted to the senior list along with Jaeger O'meara who graduates to the senior squad after being secured during the GWS mini draft twelve months ago.

Clayton particularly pleased with the selection of Clay Cameron who's signing increased the percentage of Queenslanders on the GC SUNS list to 25%.

"To provide a vehicle for Queensland talent to make their way into the AFL system has always been at the fore of our strategy and to have Clay who is an outstanding young man join the Club and have a quarter of our playing group hail from Queensland is a terrific achievement."

Pick 13: Jesse Lonergan, Launceston

Clayton says: "We've seen Jesse since he was 16. He isquite a mature, big-bodied player who crashes in and is very very competitive, extremely combative. He's played senior football for Launceston for the last two years and played in Grand Finals and did really well against senior opposition. He's got every opportunity to push into our team in the very near future."

Pick 55: Tim Sumner, Woodville West Torrens

Clayton says: "He's got a big upside and we thought weneeded to take that punt late in the draft. I've seen him take brilliant marks as a forward and kick goals and play in defence and run the ball out with speed and excitement. He's only new to the system and been at Woodville West Torrens for one year and got to play senior football. He's quite raw and got areas to improve but we'll give him every opportunity."
