Tickets for the first Toyota AFL Premiership Season match to be played in Cairns went on sale at 9am this morning, Wednesday 6 April. To be played between the Richmond Tigers and Gold Coast SUNS at Cazalys Stadium on Saturday 16 July, the game is already attracting strong interest from local sports fans.

Over 10,000 people are expected to attend the match. AFL fans in Far North Queensland can guarantee their place at the match by purchasing grandstand and general admission tickets now from:

  • Prices start at just $20 for adults, $2 for kids 15 years or under or $40 for a family of four. Booking fees may apply.

The Richmond Tigers are keen to take the team to Cairns each year, providing a unique football experience for the squad and supporters alike. Captain Chris Newman thinks it will add to the season for the players. 

“We are a young, developing team and travel provides a great learning experience, we are really looking forward to it,” Newman said.

“Richmond has in excess of 500,000 fans across Australia and games like this give us a chance to play in front of supporters that might not get to many games. We hope to see as many as possible at the game.” 

Gold Coast SUNS captain Gary Ablett is also looking forward to the match. “We’re really looking forward to the trip. A few of our team come from Far North Queensland and they’re excited about coming home to Cairns to play AFL football in front of family and friends. It will be great to see a big crowd here”, he said.

The AFL, Richmond Football Club and Queensland Government, through Events Queensland formed a partnership to bring Toyota AFL Premiership Season matches to Cairns in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Richmond will play a home match against the Gold Coast Suns at the stadium every year for the next three years.

The Federal Government are providing the necessary funds to upgrade Cazalys Stadium for 2011, including AFL standard change rooms and media facilities, and Queensland Government, AFL Cairns and local government will provide funding for the lighting upgrade for television for 2012.
