It was spectacular finish to the RACQ Careflight Base to Base Cycling Challenge on Monday afternoon, as 40 celebrity cyclists crossed the finish line at Metricon Stadium after successfully surviving the gruelling 250km ride from Toowoomba to the Gold Coast.

In wet and testing conditions, the cyclists set off at 5:30am from the Toowoomba Careflight Base for the 8-hour trek along South East Queensland, before arriving into the southern plaza of the stadium precinct shortly after 3:45pm.

It was a remarkable achievement for the local sporting stars, celebrities and business leaders who showed their support by raising much-needed funds and awareness for Careflight’s Rescue Mission service – with each rescue costing the not-for-profit organisation approximately $12,500.

GC SUNS CEO Travis Auld was among those brave enough to participate in the charity ride, and told goldcoastfc.com.au he was physically and mentally tested throughout the endurance track.

“It was certainly a challenge, we left Toomwoomba early this morning and it was raining, dark and cold as we headed down the range,” Auld said.

“The event organisers from Careflight did a fantastic job though making sure we had plenty of breaks, food and drinks – so we were well looked after.”

With more than $60,000 raised before the ride, and a projected total of $75,000 announced at the finishing point, Auld said the event was an overwhelming success for Careflight and all riders involved in the fundraiser.

“I know from the time we left this morning we had raised $60,000, and for Careflight it costs $12,500 for each rescue mission, so if we’ve helped in some way to save a life or help someone get the care they need then we as riders should feel very proud.”

Auld welcomed the event to Metricon Stadium, and said the club would remained committed towards helping strengthen the charity ride beyond 2013.

“It was fantastic to have the event finish at Metricon Stadium as part of our contribution to this community and an organisation like Careflight,” Auld said.

“It is really something that is important to the Gold Coast SUNS and Metricon Stadium.”
