The Gold Coast SUNS are pleased to confirm that 2017 first round draftee Wil Powell has extended his contract with the club for a further two years, through to the end of the 2021 AFL season.
Powell, 18, said being drafted to the SUNS was a dream come true, but knowing he will have a home on the Coast for the next three years is a great feeling.
“I’m loving my time on the Gold Coast,” said Powell.
“Being drafted to the SUNS was a dream come true, and now I get the opportunity to live out that dream for longer.”
“I’m thankful to the SUNS for giving me the opportunity to play AFL Football and I had no hesitation in committing to the club long term.”
Powell has thrived as part of a professional environment and said he looked forward to utilising all the resources he had available to make himself the best player possible.
“Luckily for me, the SUNS are providing a fantastic environment for all players,”
“There’s parts of my development that I need to continue to work on to get myself to a level where I’m able to play consistent AFL footy and I’m loving that challenge.”
“
Craig Cameron, General Manager of List Management & Strategy, was thrilled to secure the future of the club’s first pick from last year’s draft.
“We’re pleased that Wil has committed to the club, it’s clear that he is up for the challenge of being an AFL footballer, and we can’t wait to be on that journey with him,” said Cameron.
“Wil is a hard-working young man, who brings plenty of energy to the group and in his short time at the club, has shown he is committed to developing his game.”
Recruited from Claremont Football Club in Perth, Powell joined the SUNS as the 19th selection in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.
