The Gold Coast SUNS joined prominent community partners from the Beenleigh and Logan regions at a civic reception this morning, launching the club’s 2014 Australia Post Community Camp at the Beenleigh Community Centre.

Hosted by AFLQ regional manager – Richie Lyons, the entire playing list and key administration staff engaged with local councillors over breakfast on the opening morning of the two-day community camp.

With the city’s northern growth corridor one of the club’s most focused community areas, GC SUNS CEO Travis Auld was thrilled the AFL granted the club special approval to hold its 2014 Australia Post Community Camp in the area.

“We are very excited to be hosting our 2014 community camp in the Beenleigh and Logan district,” Auld said.

“We think this is such an important area for us for two reasons. It gives us the opportunity to thank the people in this city who support our football club, and because right from day one, we nominated three community pillars for our football club, with one of those being the northern corridor.

“We have spent a tremendous amount of time investing in our own back yard, and there is no better way to continue with that than through our 2014 Australia Post Community Camp.”

Logan Mayor Pam Parker was quick to point out her favourite Gold Coast player, with local star Alex Sexton receiving a warm reception from her community counterparts.

With pre-season training having been at the forefront for much of the summer, senior coach Guy McKenna said it was a welcomed break for the players to shift their focus onto organising skills clinics and speaking engagements for the community.

“For a long period now the boys have been training at a high level, so for them to get out into the community is a great mental refresher for them,” he said.

“Given we are still a young football club, it is so important for our boys to get out and give back, and with our club starting to grow, no doubt their continue service will be rewarded in our crowd attendance and membership build.”
