Gold Coast SUNS Chairman John Witheriff today confirmed that Malcolm Blight has agreed to spend more time with the fledgling club.

“Malcolm is an extremely passionate Gold Coast SUNS man and we are excited that he has kindly offered his services to further help the club.”

Blight’s ability to spend more time with the club means the coaches and players will benefit more often from the experiences he shared during his successful playing and coaching career.

Mr. Witheriff said the board, in making this appointment, agreed that the club needed to take advantage of every opportunity it has to develop the team.

Malcolm’s first hand knowledge of the clubs establishment and structure, coupled with his success as player and coach provides us with the opportunity to further fast track the development of our players and coaches.
Given his involvement in the football department, Malcolm and I agreed that he would be relieved of his board commitment until the end of the season,” Mr. Witheriff added.

GC SUNS Coach, Guy McKenna welcomed the appointment.

“We are really pleased that Malcolm has been able to make more time available to help the club for the remainder of the year.”

Having worked closely with Malcolm for three years during the build phase of our club I benefited from his knowledge and experience and I am confident he will make a significant contribution in this role,” McKenna said.
Blight played 179 games for North Melbourne including multi-tasking as player-coach in 1981. At North Melbourne he played in two premierships in 1975 and 1977, won a Brownlow Medal in 1978 and a Coleman Medal in 1982.

In 1989 he moved into full time coaching at the Geelong Football Club and took them to three Grand Finals. Blight was appointed senior coach at the Adelaide Football Club prior to the 1997 season and coached them to back to back premierships in 1997 and 1998. Blight made a coaching return with the St Kilda Football Club in 2001.
