McKenna expecting selection headaches
GUY McKenna is expecting some serious selection headaches in the coming weeks with a host of Gold Coast players returning from injury.
The SUNS have the bye this weekend and returned to training at Metricon Stadium on Friday morning following a break after last Saturday night's loss to Essendon.
One of the AFL's feel-good stories of 2013, McKenna sent an early message to his troops not to rest on their 5-7 record, and to chase as many wins as possible.
Despite the bad news that Tom Lynch (knee) would miss six to eight weeks and Michael Rischitelli (elbow) an indefinite period, the playing stocks look good for the SUNS.
McKenna said Charlie Dixon (ankle), Harley Bennell (hamstring) and Jesse Lonergan (hamstring) would be close to a return against Adelaide in round 14.
He said Gold Coast would more likely err on the side of caution, but the trio would all be considered.
Meanwhile, Karmichael Hunt (hamstring), Jared Brennan (knee) and Greg Broughton have all starred in the reserves in recent weeks and are big chances to play the Crows at Metricon Stadium.
"We're going to miss Michael Rischitelli for a few weeks," McKenna said.
"We can't replace him as far as experience goes, but certainly that hardness around the ball, Karmichael Hunt, Greg Broughton and Jared Brennan provide that. There's three ready-made replacements there.
"There's been a bit of sliding doors. We haven't been able to get a really consistent group.
"There's no headaches at match committee at the moment, but when Charlie Dixon, Harley Bennell and Jesse Lonergan come back, and all the other players, I reckon in another two or three weeks time, that's when headaches will turn into migraines."
Nathan Bock has also played three half matches in the reserves after 12 months out of action with a broken leg, but is another month away as he builds match fitness.
McKenna said Gold Coast's goals hadn't changed despite the good start.
"Our percentage has improved, our ability to hold up the opposition and for us to score, that's the more positive things and that's given us those wins," he said.
"I don't want to put a number on it because if I say six (wins), we get to six and we stop asking for the seventh, eighth and ninth wins, so it's more about that consistency and our ability to compete.
"We need to finish off the second half of the season better than we've started it and try and achieve that four-quarter performance and if we do, we'll get some more wins, that's for sure."
