David Swallow completed a successful return to football on Sunday, making a sizeable impact in the NEAFL win over Southport Sharks.
It’s positive news for both Swallow and the club, who have been awaiting his return to full fitness following a PCL injury in 2015.
“[Swallow] did really well, played over half a game, 60 minutes in total which was good, had 16-odd possessions,” GM – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, told the Optomo Injury Report.
“For him personally it was good to come back after such a long period of time, bit like Jaeger O’Meara a few weeks previous.
“The plan for him is to play a full game in this week’s NEAFL game and if all goes well, then we’ll reassess him potentially for an AFL game the week after.”
Unfortunately, during the same NEAFL game ruckman Dan Currie sustained a hand injury.
“It’s rotten luck, for Dan it’s three factures in the space of three months,” said Ashcroft.
Currie first suffered a broken finger during a NEAFL game in late June, only to sustain a similar injury to another finger on the same hand immediately upon his return.
Sunday marked the ruckman’s return to football from the second break, however, he suffered what is believed to be a fractured bone in his hand.
“Unfortunately for Dan he hasn’t has the best of luck but we will assess him as the week goes on and see whether he might be a chance to play NEAFL again.
After a week out of the senior side to rest, defender Nick Malceski has recovered from his niggling knee issues and is listed as a test for round 22.
“Nick had a week or so off to give his body and his knee a chance to mend and be at full fitness, again he will come into consideration for the senior team this weekend,” said Ashcroft.
It’s similar news for midfielder Alex Sexton, who is a chance to make his way back into Rodney Eade’s side after recovering from a corked quad.
“Secco [Sexton] is making fine progress with his cork, had a really sever cork a couple of weeks ago- unable to play last weekend.,” said Ashcroft.
“If he gets through the next day or so of training, he’s done well early in the week, he’ll be a chance to play against Collingwood on Saturday night.”
