Stepping in the Ring
Left hooks, uppercuts and jabs were thrown around the GC SUNS training facility today, with a group of players swapping the sherrin for a pair of boxing gloves this afternoon.
The high-tempo boxing session saw players slugging it out in the gym for almost an hour, throwing power-packed punches into their opponents punishing boxing pads.
Amongst the action were GC SUNS strongmen Karmichael Hunt and Nathan Bock, attracting an array of eager onlookers as people stopped to watch the powerful-duo engage in a spirited sparring contest.
Leading the high-intensity cardio workout was GC SUNS Rehabilitation Coach Max Kennedy, impressed with the squad’s willingness to work til the very end of the session.
Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au, Kennedy said for conditioned athletes like Hunt and Bock, boxing formed an important part of their training program.
“For our more experienced bodies like (Nathan) Bock, (Campbell) Brown, (Danny) Stanley and (Gary) Ablett, their weights program are modified to include strongman exercises as they don’t require the four weekly weights sessions the rest of the playing group performs,” said Kennedy.
“That is why boxing is so important for their program; it keeps them sharp, and is a fantastic way to keep their feet moving.”
Kennedy added: “It’s also a great way for someone like Campbell Brown to channel and control his natural level of aggression.”
After getting up close and personal with some of UFC’s best fighters at Metricon Stadium last year, Kennedy said that GC SUNS star captain Gary Ablett had elevated his boxing prowess over the summer.
“Gaz (Ablett) is just a genetic bull,” grinned Kennedy.
“His functional strength is as good as it gets - that’s why he’s one of the best in the competition.”
