The Gold Coast SUNS ‘Family Night Out’ originally scheduled to be held this evening at Bond University has been cancelled due to heavy rainfall.
More than 60mm of rain has already fallen across parts of the Gold Coast and according to forecasters more than 100mm is expected to fall on the Coast today.
GC SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans said it was unfortunate that the event had to be cancelled.
“It’s incredibly unfortunate that we have had to make the decision to cancel tonight’s Family Night Out at Bond University,” Evans said.
“We had staff out on site this morning and water had already began pooling around the venue and with the worst of the rain still to come, and with patron safety paramount, the decision was really taken out of our hands.
“The next opportunity for fans on the Gold Coast to get up close and personal with the team will be at our JLT game at Southport Sharks against the Brisbane Lions on Sunday March 11th.”
Evans confirmed the club would look to schedule another activity for fans in the lead up to Round 1.
“The Family Night Out is an important event for the club, it’s not just a great opportunity for our fans, but it’s incredibly important for our junior club’s across the Coast who over the years have signed up a large number of players on the day. With that being the case we will work to find an appropriate date for an event that caters to our junior members and participants on the Coast in the next couple of weeks,” Evans added.
The ‘Family Night Out’ was set to be held at Bond University for the first time as Metricon Stadium, and its surrounding facilities, has restricted access in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
As such the football component of the evening will transferred back to the Metricon Stadium precinct, however unfortunately due to the restricted access the club is not in a positon to open this to members and fans.
goldcoastfc.com.au and the club’s digital channels will provide members and fans coverage of the session.
