Gold Coast Football Club Senior Coach Guy McKenna said changes to this week’s squad reflect a need to rotate his young players after three weeks of intense VFL football.

And none was more intense than last week’s nail biting draw against Werribee Tigers in Melbourne.

Despite the mixed feelings that usually follow a draw, McKenna remains upbeat.

“It was more hollow for the boys, really. They would have loved to have won. But from a coaching group point of view, we were just rapt.”

McKenna said the rough and tumble of tough week in, week out VFL football is helping evolve the playing group physically.

“The group’s definitely getting used to working hard. In round one, six or seven cramped. The next week it was only five. And last week there was only two. So in addition to competing hard, they are learning in a physical way, which is really pleasing.”

He said the team’s impressive offensive work is an ongoing feature. The statistics don’t lie. Although the team sits thirteenth on the ladder, it has scored the sixth most points.

“Against Werribee, our offensive measures were again good,” he said. “In a way that’s the easiest thing to coach into players. But still we need to work on defensive measures and that takes time. You look at Hawthorn and ‘Clarko’s Cluster’ and St Kilda under Ross Lyon. Both clubs went through a few years of pain the get their system’s in place. We have to be patient.”

McKenna will be available to talk to media tomorrow at 11am following training at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport.

Please Note: Venue Change
This week’s game against Casey Scorpions was to be played at Cooke Murphy Oval, Labrador but ground conditions there were deemed unsuitable for VFL.

The game will now be played at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport at 2.00pm.

• Casey Scorpions is aligned with AFL club Melbourne Demons and sits sixth on the ladder with two wins and a loss.
• For a 23 year old, newly selected ruckman Tim Plummer is somewhat of a journeyman. He played in the VFL for Tasmania in 2008, later completed a pre-season with Essendon and last year won best and fairest at AFLQ club, Kenmore Bears.
• GCFC had ten goal kickers against Werribee.
• Talented ruckman Zac Smith and never-say-die centre half back Michael Coad are enjoying a stellar run of form. Both have featured in all three post-match ‘best on ground’ lists.
