Every team that comes up against the Sydney Swans invariably has the same question in game week - how do we stop Adam Goodes?

For the inexperienced Gold Coast SUN, the question takes on even more significance ahead of Saturday night's match at Metricon Stadium.

While most teams have a number of experienced bodies to contemplate throwing at the dual Brownlow medallist, the GC SUNS simply don't have that luxury.

At 194cm and 99kg, the athleticism Goodes possesses is hard to match up on for anyone.

The Suns had a sneak preview last weekend with Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich (192cm, 100kg), who has a similar roving commission.

When Pavlich played forward, the choice was simple - Nathan Bock - and that will be the case again with Goodes.

But Guy McKenna's big concern will come if the Swans superstar moves to the midfield and even more so into the ruck.

The most obvious match-up is utility Jared Brennan (195cm, 96kg), but even he was baulking at the thought of matching up with Goodes.

"I've done the role a couple of times but I probably don't want to do it this week," he laughed.

"The thing with Adam Goodes is, he's played ruck as well. He's a unique player, he's an exceptional player actually and he's proved it over a lot of years."

The Suns have already been on the end of a hiding from Goodes in 2011, when he came to the Gold Coast and kicked six goals in wet conditions in an NAB Challenge match in early March.

On that occasion McKenna played Michael Coad and Jack Hutchins on Goodes as he stayed planted in the forward 50 for the three quarters he played.

Rather than following him if he starts to roam, Brennan threw up another idea.

"We're not generally a huge tagging team, so whether we back our players to win the ball in close, we'll have to see how the game pans out," he said.

"If he gets away early, we'll have to do something about it. "

Finding that 'something' is exactly what McKenna will no doubt be thinking of all week.
