The need for on-ballers to continue to improve in the art of tackling has never been more important.

The Gold Coast SUNS have continued to put more emphasis on wrestling and grappling techniques and David Swallow has taken it upon himself to lead the charge during each session, the Gold Coaster earning the reputation as a specialist around a congested footy.

“I’ve really enjoyed the wrestling aspect of the training session,” Swallow told SUNS TV.

“It really helps the players with the technique side of it, and getting use to physical contact because that’s the nature of the sport we play.”

While the coaching staff are aware that a combated physical game suits some players, it is Swallow’s voice that has been bearing the most weight on the padded surfaces of Merrimac’s training facilities.

There are few players in the AFL that attack each possession with maximum effort and minimal regard for self-preservation.

“I guess I have tried to encouraged everyone to use their voice and really push that if you have something to say, then say it.

“Pleasingly, everyone is feeling the same so you try and get everyone through as best as possible.”

Specialising in optimising performance, martial arts expert Cameron Quinn has been working closely with the playing list this pre-season, with the accomplished fighter having refereed on the undercard for Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva’s UFC showdown in Brisbane last month.

GC SUNS Defensive coach – Dean Solomon, told goldcoastfc.com.au he had brought a wealth of knowledge to the club.

“Cameron has worked with Rugby Australia and AFL Clubs, and has brought a new dimension to our tackling,” Solomon said.

Confident the playing group has made big inroads this summer, Swallow says he is looking forward sticking tackles against quality AFL opposition through the NAB Challenge series.

“Most clubs are trying to gain an edge by getting a good tackling coach.

“Hopefully the boys can continue to train hard and implement some of their new tackling techniques on game day.”
