Gold Coast SUNS midfielder Jaeger O'Meara had scans in Brisbane this afternoon to determine the extent of the right knee injury he suffered in this morning's NEAFL practice match.

O'Meara, who dislocated his kneecap in the incident, will be sidelined for an extended period after scans revealed he will require surgery after rupturing his patella tendon.

General Manager Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said it was too early to confirm the specific surgery or an expected return date for O'Meara.

"The results of Jaeger's scans have confirmed he has ruptured his patella tendon. Jaeger and the club will determine the most appropriate treatment of the injury in the coming days.

"The anticipated timeframe that Jaeger will be sidelined for is unknown at this stage and will become more apparent following surgery," Ashcroft said.

O'Meara injured his knee during the second quarter of the game against the Brisbane Lions at Coorparoo.

It was O'Meara's first game back after undergoing patella surgery on both knees in London at the end of last season.
