Gary Ablett is poised to add another historical mark to his extraordinary list of achievements with the Gold Coast SUNS, needing two goals against St.Kilda at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night to become the first player to kick 100 goals for the club.
Coming off two goals against Melbourne in the season opener last week, when he was on the SUNS goal-kicking sheet for the 50th time, Ablett leads the club’s all-time goal list with 98 from Harley Bennell (82) and Tom Lynch (81).
Jarrod Harbrow, the SUNS’ games record holder, is also set for a key milestone night against St.Kilda.
Harbrow will play his 80th game for the SUNS and the 150th of his fine career after 70 games with the Western Bulldogs from 2007-2010.
Originally from Cairns, the electrifying 26-year-old left-footer will become the 20th Queenslander all-time to reach this mark.
Heading the Queensland 150-gamers are Jason Akermanis (325), Marcus Ashcroft (318), Michael Voss (289) and Nick Riewoldt, who will skipper the St.Kilda side against the SUNS in his 283rd AFL game.
Interestingly, there are seven Gold Coasters on the Queensland 150-game list, with SUNS General Manager of Football Operations Ashcroft, Riewoldt, Suns rehabilitation coach Matthew Kennedy (180)), David Hale (220), Dan Merrett (173), Ben Hudson (168) and Michael Osborne (168).
Others Queenslanders to play 150 AFL games are Jason Dunstall (269), Gavin Crosisca (246), Mal Michael (238), Max Hudghton (234), Scott McIvor (200), Mitch Hahn (181), Brett Voss (170), Clint Bizzell (163), Che Cockatoo-Collins (160) and Brad Miller (157).
Also, Nick Malceski, Mitch Hallahan, Jarrod Garlett, Touk Miller and Adam Saad, who debuted for the SUNS against Melbourne in Round 1, are set to play their first home game on Saturday night after coach Rodney Eade confirmed three team changes for the Saints.
Tom Lynch, back from suspension, will join Seb Tape and Sean Lemmens in replacing Matt Shaw (suspended), Trent McKenzie and Daniel Gorringe (omitted).
The five-player debut contingent of Malceski, Hallahan, Garlett, Miller and Saad last week was the biggest first-game contingent for the club since the very first SUNS game in 2011, when obviously all 22 players were SUNS first-gamers.
This took to 72 the total number of players to wear the red and yellow at AFL level.
Also last week, David Swallow’s 16 possessions against Melbourne saw him become just the fifth player to reach 1500 possessions for the club. He followed Ablett, Dion Prestia, Harbrow and Danny Stanley.
Swallow was third quickest in terms of games to 1500 possessions behind Ablett and Prestia, having reached this milestone in his 74th game.
Lynch, who missed the season opener last week due to a NAB Challenge suspension, is a critical inclusion as the SUNS look to post their first win of 2015 against St.Kilda.
Runner-Up to Swallow in the best and fairest last year, Lynch was the SUNS’ leading goal-kicker in 2014, and also led the team in marks, contested marks, marks inside forward 50 and goal assists.
Prestia will play his 29th consecutive game for the club against St.Kilda. It is now the longest live streak after Jaeger O’Meara’s 44 games in a row from debut and Danny Stanley 40-game streak were cut short by injury last week.
The SUNS have an overall 3-4 win/loss record against St.Kilda, having won three of the last four times they’ve met, and are 2-2 overall against the Saints at Metricon.
Harley Bennell and Michael Rischitelli are the only SUNS players to have played in all seven games against St.Kilda, while Ablett leads the club in goals, possessions and best and fairest votes against St.Kilda.
