Gold Coast Suns captain Gary Ablett continues to attract new fans to the AFL and this time the dual Brownlow medallist did it on an international level, meeting Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany on Monday night.
Metricon Stadium, the home of the Gold Coast SUNS, hosted the English Premier League heavyweights this week ahead of the team's exhibition match against Melbourne City on Saturday afternoon.
Kompany, the Belgian football superstar who plays for and captains both the English club Manchester City and his national team, played student to the masterful Ablett as Kompany swapped the round ball for our country’s iconic Sherrin.
The Gold Coast superstar said he was thrilled to meet Kompany and members from the “Citizens”, revealing his own interest in the sport.
“I do,” Ablett confirmed when asked whether he follows the world game.
“We’ve got a lot of players that are right into it, (and) a couple of my best mates (also) grew up playing soccer/football.
“I’m learning more about it and I do enjoy it. We try and get a game going in between training just to change things up a little bit, and now I have a side to support which is exciting.”
Manchester City will take on their Australian sister club this weekend, with a potential line-up set to include leading MCFC international players Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart, Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure.
The Gold Coast SUNS meet the GWS Giants in their round 16 encounter at Metricon Stadium this Saturday.
