It’s the Round 17 edition of the Gold Coast SUNS weekly Club Champion countdown, as compiled by goldcoastfc.com.au., making the top 5 this week...

There was just no going past Gary Ablett this week, the Captain was at his prolific and inspirational best as he went on to finish with a career second-best 49 disposals, ten clearances, six inside-50s and two goals – proving to be a damaging forward of centre.

But it was his magic touch in the deciding stages of the match that had the crowd most impressed, the code’s best player swerving through a barrage of Magpies before kicking a crucial goal to seal the victory for the Gold Coasters when the game was there to be won.

A masterclass performance in the ruck sees Tom Nicholls earn a consecutive appearance in the weekly Club Champion Countdown, the SUNS current no.1 ruckman refusing to back down in his dual against Ben Hudson and Jarrod Witts, racking up a game-high 33 hit-outs.

But it wasn’t just his work in the air that had the Magpies weary of the 200cm ruckman, the in-form Gold Coaster sticking an equal-game 8 tackles to cap off yet another stellar performance in the red and gold.

There seems to be no end in sight for Rory Thompson’s growing potential at Centre Half-Back, the key defender causing all sorts of headaches for the Magpies no.1 forward in Travis Cloke – the premiership star failing to hurt the SUNS on the scoreboard, kicking just two goals in a performance likely to see Thompson earn further support for an All-Australian selection.

Of course Jaeger O’Meara manages to find himself in the Countdown for the seventh time this season, and could very well find he wearing the 2013 Gold Coast SUNS Club Championship after a remarkable debut season.

With 23 disposals, seven marks, four clearances and eight tackles, O’Meara showed he could perform under the bright lights in front of almost 20,000 screaming AFL fans at Metricon Stadium.

That wraps up another edition of the Gold Coast SUNS 2013 Club Championship countdown – exclusively on goldcoastfc.com.au.
