He was perhaps the most surprising inclusion in the 2019 leadership group, but George Horlin-Smith’s impact at the SUNS has been nothing short of inspirational.
Coming up to the Gold Coast from Geelong in the trade period, Horlin-Smith has only had six months to get to know his new teammates.
But that was no barrier towards him being voted in by the players as a member of the eight-man leadership group.
“It’s really special to be seen in that light from the playing group,” Horlin-Smith told SUNS Media.
“But I understand the challenges ahead for myself and the seven others that we need to represent the group in the right manner and push the team forward.”
The former Cat already had an extensive resume and reputation behind him, winning Geelong’s “Best Clubman” award at their 2018 Best and Fairest.
The 26-year-old said it was flattering to know he had made an immediate impression on the group in such a short time, despite not yet playing a game for the club.
“I feel as though during training that’s probably your first chance to show your teammates you’re here for the right reasons and you want to join in where they’re heading,” Horlin-Smith said.
“So that’s probably where you can first gain a bit of notice but I’m looking forward to earning respect too during games.”
Horlin-Smith says he was fortunate to be welcomed so rapidly into the club and is hoping to strengthen the bonds he has already made with the players.
That’s the aspect of his new role he is looking forward to most.
“It probably is a little bit (about) getting to know the players better throughout the year and seeing them grow too,” Horlin-Smith said.
“I think the level of growth from day one of pre-season to now has been enormous and it’s something that’s really exciting for the footy club.”
