SUNS midfielder Jesse Lonergan has continued his hot streak of form through the pre-season to be joint leader of the NEAFL MVP Award after the opening round of voting.

The 23-year-old polled nine out of a maximum 10 votes for his 26 disposals and eight clearances in the SUNS’ 20-point win against Aspley on Saturday afternoon.

He ties NT Thunder veteran Cameron Ilett who also recorded nine votes in the Thunder’s one-point victory over Brisbane.

Jacob Dawson and Michael Barlow were two other SUNS who polled well, both receiving five votes with 18-year-old Dawson captaining the side for the first time on the weekend.

Max Spencer also received three votes for his defensive effort on Aspley’s dangerous forward line.

The NEAFL MVP Award is presented to the player uniquely judged the best in the competition by a combination of umpire and coaches votes.

The votes are submitted post-game cast on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. As such, the maximum amount of votes a single player can earn per match is 10 – courtesy of the maximum five votes from both umpires and coaches.
