Gold Coast Senior Coach Stuart Dew revealed that David Swallow will captain the side this Saturday in the absence of Tom Lynch and Steven May through injury.
The captaincy reflects his standing within the SUNS’ playing group and is an obvious promotion given the midfielder’s exceptional form of late.
Swallow was easily one of the SUNS’ best on ground in the loss to Adelaide on the weekend, carrying the team with his 32 disposal and three-goal effort.
The 25-year-old has been named as skipper for the first time during the premiership season, having been part of the club’s leadership group since 2014.
“We’ve got a couple of good leaders obviously still playing, David Swallow and Touk Miller, those guys are in the leadership group,” Dew said.
“David will skipper the side this week and the way he played last week, it’s fitting – he gets a reward this week to be captain.”
This year has been a big one for Swallow, becoming a father in February and getting some continuity with his football.
He is a highly respected figure in the SUNS’ inner sanctum both on and off the field, and his teammates know exactly what they will get from him.
“He leads by example with his physicality and the way he approaches his footy,
“Everyone sees the two hours on Saturday but he’s a significant leader for the group from Monday to Friday as well.”
