An AFL debut is a momentous occasion for any player.
Running out on the home ground for your local club – that you’ve been a part of since you were 12 years of age – makes it that little bit more special.
Cap things off with a win and it doesn’t get much better than that for draftee Brad Scheer.
“I probably still can’t really believe it, it was an amazing feeling running out in the warm-up and being in front of the home fans” Scheer told SUNS TV after Saturday night’s victory over the Cats.
“They all turned out in force, a lot of Palm Beach people.”
He didn’t have long to settle, with so many quality players on the field the game was in the balance early on.
“Then first bounce of the ball, just running around with the likes of Gary Ablett, and then out on the field Dangerfield and Selwood."
“Still a bit of a weird feeling but sure I’ll come to terms with it soon.”
Although he didn’t hit the scoreboard, the directive from Senior Coach Rodney Eade before the game was clear.
“Bring contested pressured, tackling inside 50, just making every contest and putting my body on the line,” said Scheer.
The 19-year-old finished with five tackles as he and his fellow forwards applied plenty of pressure to Geelong’s defenders.
After celebrating the win, Gold Coast’s attention turns quickly to Sunday's historic match against Port Adelaide in Shanghai, China.
Scheer said the priority for the team would be to recover ahead of the international flight on Wednesday.
“Recovering quickly… it’ll be a light week on the track,” he said.
“Recover well, enjoy the experience but also we’re there for a job.”
