Brayden Fiorini stamped himself as an A-grade midfielder of the future with an outstanding performance in just his second AFL game.

Fiorini filled the stats sheet in the SUNS’ 23-point loss to Port Adelaide, collecting 32 disposals, seven marks, five clearances, 12 tackles and booting two goals.

After tallying 17 disposals on debut against Collingwood, the 19-year-old compiled a showing that left Gold Coast fans salivating for the future in a week where two young midfield stars announced their intentions to leave the club.

“Obviously I learnt from last week. Just tried to be more composed and actually influence the game and get involved instead of just being a spectator so it gives me confidence going into next year,” Fiorini told BLK RAW post-game.

“Pretty spent now. A big step up coming in from the NEAFL so body’s needing a break now.”

The Northern Knights product was thrown in the deep end by the coaching staff, attending 17 centre bounces on Saturday night against much bigger bodies including competition stars Ollie Wines and Robbie Gray.

Despite being outsized, Fiorini was able to hold his own and said he learned a lot from the experience.

“Credit to the coaches just throwing me in there. Probably not ready yet body-wise but it’s good experience for me and take a lot from it going forward,” Fiorini said.

“Less overwhelmed this week than I was last week. Just learn little tricks that they do and little habits. It’s great experience getting thrown in there.”

Fiorini’s second game had extra significance, given his best mate Darcy Macpherson had earned a senior recall and the pair was able to run out together at AFL level for the first time.

After Macpherson booted a last-quarter goal, the celebration between the two afterwards was a special moment for both players.

“Obviously the first time we’ve run out together in this jumper,” Fiorini said.

“That goal was getting us going so it was a great feeling and hopefully more to come.”
