This Saturday, the Gold Coast SUNS will face the emerging juggernaut that is Greater Western Sydney. A side that has won four consecutive games by an average of 56.5 points, scoring 132.5 points per game in the process.

The Giants also lead the competition in scores from turnovers in that four-week period, with 43.29 of its 79.56 coming as a result of turnovers.

SUNS coach Rodney Eade is wary of the firepower his side faces this week at Spotless Stadium and has some tactics in-mind to restrict the opposition scoring, but knows the SUNS must hit the scoreboard as well if they’re any chance to pull off an upset win.

“We’ll try a few things, we’ve got to do some things different,” Eade told United Coaches Chat.

“We can’t afford to have the turnovers because they’ve been the turnover kings there. If you turn it over, they’ve scored more than any other team in the competition.

“So where we kick the ball and how we move the ball forward will have to be looked at, but having said that we’ve got to kick some goals. We’ve got Tommy Lynch forward who’s second in the Coleman [medal] who is doing extremely well so we’ve got to give him enough looks at it as well.

“We can’t afford to be too defensive. If we do that it ends up being the fact that we don’t score, so we’ve got to be able to score.”

One of the keys to stopping a strong Giants forward line is the performance of Sam Day, who has been impressive down back after switching roles out of pure necessity with key defenders Rory Thompson (ankle) and Steven May (suspension) both on the sidelines.

The South Australian started the year up forward as support for Lynch, but has performed shutdown roles on North's Drew Petrie and rising star Jesse Hogan in recent weeks with aplomb.

“He’s been terrific Sam. He was hot and cold last year and probably his whole career,” Eade said.

“His first four games was pleasing as a forward and we’ve had to put him down back. He’s done well on Petrie, kept him to two. Down in Geelong, got injured and struggled a bit but then on Hogan, they’ve kicked 20 odd goals and Hogan’s only kicked one.

“That seems to get lost in the media a little bit about how well he’s doing so it’s been really pleasing from our point of view.”
