At the halfway mark of Saturday morning’s intraclub match, it appeared Sam Day had locked himself into a round one key forward position alongside Tom Lynch.

The former No. 3 draft pick had booted three goals to be the standout big on the ground, but was well held by Rory Thompson after the half-time break and was unable to add to his tally.

Senior coach Rodney Eade told reporters he was happy with Day’s overall output.

“I think he (Day) showed some signs today,” Eade said following the intraclub match.

“Kicked two or three or whatever he did today so that was pleasing.”

While Day is still the frontrunner to partner with vice-captain Lynch against Essendon, 19-year-old Peter Wright is still well and truly in the mix for senior selection.

‘Two-metre Peter’ had the unenviable task of going one-on-one with Gold Coast’s premier defender in Steven May, but still managed to pluck some strong marks and kick a couple of goals in a losing side. His 203cm, 100 kilogram frame is a tantalising prospect for Eade, looming as a matchup nightmare for most sides in the competition.

“I thought Peter Wright showed a little bit, he got his hands to a few,” Eade said.

“He didn’t actually mark them which he’s got to improve on that but just his height’s going to be an advantage so I think there’s a bit of competition for that spot.”
