One of the most intriguing storylines of the pre-season is the battle between Sam Day and Peter Wright for the second key forward position in Gold Coast’s round one side alongside Tom Lynch.

Wright was the most dangerous forward on the ground early on in NAB2 against West Coast, booting two first quarter goals to go with three marks (two inside 50) in the opening stanza.

The 19-year-old didn’t add to his goal tally after quarter time but continued to provide a target up forward in tough conditions.

Meanwhile, Day ended the game with nine disposals, four marks and a goal but it was his appetite for the contest that really impressed senior coach Rodney Eade.

“Pete showed some really good signs so there’s a lot to like about him,” Eade told reporters in his post-match press conference.

“Sam was slow to get going but I thought his contest in the second half was great.”

Following the final siren, the veteran mentor couldn’t split the pair with his two big key forwards sharing the honours.

With one more pre-season game to go, Eade is facing a selection headache in making a decision on who he takes into the round one clash against Essendon. But at this stage, it’s a good problem to have.

“It was probably a draw at the end,” Eade said.

“I thought Pete was pretty good first half and I thought Sam came into the game in the second half.

“It’ll be an interesting dilemma we’ll have with that.”
