Kade Kolodjashnij has achieved a double statistical “first” as he continues to defy the feared second-year blues.
In his 28th AFL game, Kolodjashnij had a career-best 27 possessions in the Gold Coast SUNS’ loss to the Sydney Swans at Metricon Stadium on Saturday and topped the SUNS possession count for the first time.
It was the teenage Tasmanian’s seventh consecutive game of 20 or more possessions and surpassed as his best the 25 touches against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in Round 7.
The 19-year-old defender, third on the SUNS possession list this year behind Michael Rischitelli and Dion Prestia, became the 13th different player to top the SUNS possession count in the club’s 98 AFL games (including ties).
Gary Ablett has done so most often, topping the stats sheet 52 times, followed by Prestia (15 times), Rischitelli (9), Harley Bennell (8), David Swallow (4), Danny Stanley (4), Jared Brennan (3), Sam Iles (3), Jaeger O’Meara (2), Jarrod Harbrow (2), Mitch Hallahan (2) and Nathan Bock (1).
Kolodjashnij’s standout performance in a spirited SUNS performance against the Swans comes a fortnight after he set a club record for most marks in a game against Collingwood at Metricon in Round 8.
He took 13 marks against the Pies to surpass the previous SUNS’ best of 12 marks, taken by Danny Stanley against GWS Giants and Steven May against Hawthorn in 2012.

The exciting defender has had 46 bounces in nine games in his debut season – almost half the entire team total of 95 in 10 games. At the same last year the SUNS had played only 29 different players. It 35 different players to Round 10 in 2011, 38 in 2012 and 33 in 2013. There was more experience in the players on the sideline (1221 games) than there was in the side that played the Swans (1134 games).
