The Gold Coast SUNS reserves made it back-to-back wins after recording an upset 15-point victory over Sydney University in Blacktown on Saturday.
In a tight tussle all afternoon, the SUNS’ accuracy in front of goal was a key factor in the win, outgunning the Students 10.7 (67) to 6.16 (52).
Key forward Peter Wright illustrated why he was touted as a potential No. 1 draft pick this time last year. “Two-Metre Peter” booted six goals for the SUNS, two of which came in a tense final quarter with the 18-year-old’s work around the ground, poise from set shots, and ability to stand up when his team needed a spark lauded by those in attendance.
Seb Tape’s ferocious attack on the Sherrin was evident all afternoon, with the usual defender spending plenty of time in the midfield on his way to 27 disposals and a team-high nine clearances.
Matt Shaw (32 disposals), Greg Broughton (29), Josh Glenn (23) and Andrew Raines (22) offered plenty of support to drive the SUNS to victory.
Jack Leslie and Rory Thompson were exceptional in the key defensive posts, reading the play and shutting down numerous opposition forays.
Leslie finished the game with 18 disposals, 13 marks and seven rebound 50s.
The SUNS match up against coast rivals, Southport Sharks in a season-defining match this Saturday at Fankhauser Reserve.
