The Gold Coast SUNS’ first ever win against Sydney couldn’t have come at a better time, with the club snapping an 11-game losing streak in the historic victory.

In the rooms post-match, SUNS forward Alex Sexton told SUNS TV he could feel an immediate difference within the group.

“It brings the morale up massively,” Sexton said.

“You could tell straight away after the game, the whole club was in here and excited.

“It’s a massive win for our football club and definitely the most exciting and best win I’ve been a part of since I’ve been here.”

The Swans had been unbeaten in the previous eight encounters against the SUNS, but the drought-breaking win was made even sweeter when Gold Coast overcame a 29-point deficit at quarter time.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for a win especially this season so it’s good that hard work has come towards a win.

“They’re a massive club and they’re having a massive year and it’s a big scalp for us.”

Sexton says the work behind the scenes has never faltered, although the success on-field has been slim.

But the win cements the forward’s belief that the club is making progress and on the way towards more success.

“In-house we’ve been working extremely hard to try and get our game-plan going and today we were able to do that against a good side, a top-six competitor so it’s good,” Sexton said.

“As a forward group we prided ourselves on pressure today and to help the backs out bigtime and I think we did that.”

The SUNS are favourites to make it back-to-back wins against Carlton next week at Metricon Stadium, and Sexton says Saturday’s win will give them a vital boost ahead of a home game.

“(It gives us) massive confidence that what we’ve been working on does work against top-eight sides,” he said.

“They’re going to definitely push for finals Sydney and we need to take a lot of confidence out of that and move it into next week.”
