Swans thump SUNS in dour affair

GOLD Coast’s nightmare Groundhog Day has continued, losing key defender Steven May in a 52- point loss to Sydney.

Like the performance against Hawthorn last week, a 53-point defeat in Launceston, SUNS coach Rodney Eade would take positives out of Saturday’s outing.

His troops were simply outclassed by the Swans, beaten in the contests 141 to 119 and, more damningly, out in space where the Swans hard running led to a whopping 125 uncontested possession differential.

Tom Nicholls was best for the SUNS, winning the ruck duel against Mike Pyke in the Swan’s 100th game.

Kade Kolodjashnij got plenty of the footy, although it must be said the game seemed to be kick to kick from the two halfback flanks for the second half.

Life won’t get any easier for the SUNS.

GOLD Coast fullback Steven May is a chance to face Fremantle next week despite sustaining a groin injury in Saturday night's 52-point loss against the Sydney Swans.

May was replaced during the third quarter by substitute Clay Cameron, but SUNS coach Rodney Eade said it was more a precautionary measure.

Eade also indicated that while May was a chance to play next Saturday, big name off-season recruit Nick Malceski was no certainty, despite completing a second match in the NEAFL.

May sustained his groin strain early in the second quarter before playing on.

SUNS slump to the bottom of the premiership ladder after 52 point loss to Swans

A burst of brilliance from the Gold Coast SUNS in the third quarter wasn’t enough to get them over the line as they sunk to the bottom of the premiership ladder.

The Swans 13.15 (93) ran home winners over the SUNS 5.11 (41) and pushed the Gold Coast to 18th on the ladder.

The SUNS and Carlton are both on four points but a 0.5 per cent difference in for and against was enough to push the SUNS and their miserable season to the bottom.

It goes from bad to bad for the SUNS who also looked to have lost May to injury after he sat on the bench with ice strapped to his quad.

The loss comes after the SUNS showed some bright patches of attack and defence during the third quarter, clawing their way back to within 39 points of the Swans.
