The cavalry is on its way for Gold Coast, with three first-choice SUNS firmly in the frame to make their return to line up against Geelong on Saturday night.

Captain Steven May is a near certain starter to take on the Cats, making his comeback from a hamstring injury sustained in the final 10 minutes of the side’s round four victory over Carlton.

2014 Club Champion David Swallow, will also return after being managed last week, while Kade Kolodjashnij, who was a late withdrawal against North Melbourne due to illness, will be available this weekend.

General Manager of Football Operations – Marcus Ashcroft said May’s strong desire to diligently complete his rehab had paid off.

“He has done really well over these past couple of weeks to be available to play this week,” Ashcroft told the Optomo Injury Report.

“Obviously he [May] still needs to get through Thursday’s main training session but he is progressing to that point and should be available on Saturday night.”

As revealed by goldcoastfc.com.au, as part of his long-term return to AFL football, Swallow was managed by the club’s high performance team, strengthening his chances of performing over a sustained period this season.

The combative midfielder will reclaim his position in the centre square on Saturday night.

“David is a definite starter – as part of his long term plan, we kept him out last week to refresh and regenerate his body,” Ashcroft said.

“He has done everything right this week and will be a definite starter on Saturday night.”

Unfortunately, the news isn’t as good for forward Jarrad Grant, who is set to be sidelined for the next three weeks with bone bruising around the knee.

The diagnosis is better than initially feared, with medical staff suspecting at the time he may have suffered a more serious injury.

“’Granty’ went down on Saturday during our reserves game in Sydney; we feared the worst initially but scans came back positive,” Ashcroft said.

“It is only bone bruising; may only miss three games and then be available post our bye.”
