The Gold Coast SUNS Community Camp became a travelling road show today with the playing list visiting various schools across the region to spread the AFL gospel and encourage an army of new fans to get behind the Coasts newest sporting licence.

Today’s school visits came after a busy weekend for the players which included taking part in a highly successful Junior AFL gala sign on day at the Broadwater Parklands precinct on Saturday, followed by the completion of the players testing for their Bronze medallion at the Kurrawa Surf Club on Sunday.

It seems the Clubs dedication to the Community is paying off with the nine hundred strong student group at Currumbin State School providing Captain Gary Ablett and Karmichael Hunt with a heroes welcome as they dropped by for a visit, and while the kids were super excited to spend time with the GC SUNS stars, the importance of the occasion also hit home for Ablett.

“I can remember growing up myself and going to some clinics like this and even having some AFL players come to our school it was some of the highlights of my life as a kid and to be able to come along and put a smile on their faces is just great to be able to do.”

The visit was also doubled as the official launch of the Are you smarter than a SUNS player schools challenge, a fact driven quiz which today saw our superstars stumped by their primary school counterparts several occasions.

Students interested in taking part in the Are you smarter than a GC SUNS player quiz are encouraged to register their class through the community section on the Gold Coast SUNS website, www.goldcoastfc.com.au/aflquiz with some great prizes on offer.

With well over ten thousand members and a growing number of supporters ready to cheer them on in 2011, Gary said the GC SUNS players are extremely excited at the prospect of testing themselves in the NAB Cup in just under two weeks time.

“The boys cant wait to get into it, so that will be good, it will allow us to play some young kids and get a bit of conditioning into their legs and we'll be ready to go for round two.”

Tomorrow the GC SUNS Community Camp sees the boys bound for Beenleigh with a training session and superclinic.
