Metricon Stadium and the Brisbane Heat were thrilled to welcome 20,135 fans to the stadium on Wednesday January 1 for the Brisbane Heat v Perth Scorchers Big Bash (BBL) match.
The crowd was the largest since the Gold Coast SUNS v Collingwood Magpies AFL Premiership Season match in 2014 (24,032) and the third highest crowd for a regular sporting match since the Stadium opened.
Wednesday night’s match was the third BBL game Metricon Stadium has played host to this season.
Tim Carey, General Manager – Metricon Stadium, said the record crowd on New Year’s Day proves the strong appetite for high quality cricket matches on the Gold Coast.
“Metricon Stadium, along with Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars, have worked hard to bring BBL to the Coast over the past two seasons,” he said.
“To see 20,135 fans on Wednesday night enjoying our facility was a fantastic result for all those involved.”
“Our drop-in pitch was first utilised in the 18/19 BBL season and has been a great success yet again this year.”
Metricon Stadium is a world class venue, hosting AFL, International and BBL cricket as well as playing a major role in the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics events. The Stadium will also host the GC SUNS first AFLW home game on February 15, 2020, before welcoming the international Queen + Adam Lambert concert on February 29.
