SKIPPER Gary Ablett is considered a strong chance to return from calf injury against Richmond at Cazaly’s Stadium this weekend, but the star midfielder will need to prove his fitness before taking to the field for the North Queensland clash.
The 245-game Gold Coaster was a late withdrawal against the Brisbane Lions in the side’s Round 15 QCLASH at the Gabba, after goldcoastfc.com.au revealed late on Friday night that Ablett had sustained significant inflammation around his calf muscle and had been ruled out of the match against the Lions.
GC SUNS General Manager of Football Operations Marcus Ashcroft said the club would give Ablett every opportunity to play this Saturday night.
“We will give Gary every chance to play this week, we have our main session on Wednesday and our medical & high performance team will be in a better position to determine his availability following that session.” said Ashcroft.
Meanwhile, Karmichael Hunt will be available for selection this week, the body-crunching utility has been cleared to play this week after overcoming a niggling calf injury.
“Karmichael will be available for selection this week, the Match Committee will need determine what level he plays and whether that is in Cairns against the Tigers or in the NEAFL against Aspley,” Ashcroft added.
Sam Day (groin soreness) and Daniel Gorringe (shoulder) are also set to face fitness tests ahead of Saturday’s game against Richmond.
