Gold Coast SUNS coach Guy McKenna yesterday took ten local junior coaching co-ordinators from the AFL Gold Coast Junior League, through a coach mentor session they wont forget in a long time.

The coach mentor program, which is an initiative of both the Gold Coast SUNS and AFL Queensland, provides coaching co-ordinators from each of the Junior clubs from all over the Gold Coast, the opportunity to learn from a current AFL coach through this mentor process.

McKenna, who has driven the need for this program and been a willing Ambassador for the past two years of the program, gave local coaches from each junior club an insight on his world as coach, visit into the players meeting room and a few tips that the coach co ordinators can take back to their club coaches at grass roots level.

And for Coach McKenna, to add to the challenge yesterdays mentor program visit, was all done in amongst the hype and busy schedule of the team training yesterday as part of People's Day at Metricon Stadium.

McKenna said ”This program is important because like the players having coaches and assistant coaches to mentor them, young and developing coaches need coaches to mentor them as part of their development”.

“If by doing this program each year, the coaching co-ordinators from each club can pick up one thing that they can put into practice, then this program is worthwhile”.
