Second-year star Jaeger O’Meara believes his side’s narrow loss to West Coast could be the catalyst Gold Coast needs to steer its season back on track.
The GC SUNS came agonisingly close to defeating the Eagles at Patersons Stadium last week, almost chasing down the fast-starting home side after a feeble opening performance in the opening three terms.
It marked the team’s third successive defeat, and put a blemish on a season which has put the rest of the AFL on notice and included a five-game winning streak.
A crucial victory over Geelong tomorrow night would not only reinstate the club’s position inside the top eight, but give Gold Coast a major confidence-booster ahead of the upcoming matches against Hawthorn and Collingwood.
"We do have a pretty tough stretch coming," O’Meara told The West Australian.
"Obviously we're coming up against some pretty good sides and we feel as if we can match them.
"It's going to take some of our best footy and I think the main thing for us is our consistency throughout games.
"Coming up against the really good sides in the comp, we're going to have to do that.”
The 2013 AFL Rising Star winner said his midfield partners were looking forward to taking on the Cats’ match-hardened midfield featuring the likes of Norm Smith medallists Jimmy Bartel and Steven Johnson, with the latter headlining Geelong’s six changes for Saturday’s clash.
"If we play that sort of football, win the contested footy, tackle hard and really fix up our skill errors, I think we can match any side in the comp."
