Matthew Warnock and Greg Broughton will make their return to the AFL with the veteran defenders named in an extended squad ahead of Sunday’s match against West Coast at Metricon Stadium.
Experienced campaigners Warnock and Broughton have been added to Gold Coast’s starting line-up, while rookie livewire Louis Herbert and project tall Henry Schade remain in the mix for a senior berth.
Broughton’s inclusion is a massive boost for the 27-year-old half-back, with a recent elbow injury restricting him to light duties in the last fortnight.
General Manager of Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft welcomed Broughton’s experience and composure to the senior team.
“Greg has been ultra consistent for us this season, missing just two games as a vital piece to our backline puzzle,” Ashcroft said.
“He competes hard, is fantastic in the one-on-one battles and offers plenty of leadership on the ground.”
“We’re looking forward to having him back in the side.”
Meanwhile, Sunday’s matinee will mark Warnock’s first AFL appearance since the side’s 40-point win over Greater Western Sydney in round six.
The 30-year-old has shown in his eight years playing AFL football his ability to lock down opposition forwards, and Ashcroft said the club was expecting no different from Warnock this weekend.
“This season hasn’t been as polished as Matthew may have hoped, but the way he has conducted himself in his efforts to reclaim a first-team call-up has been excellent,” Ashcroft said.
“’Knockers’ has left no stone unturned, and has earned another opportunity at senior level.”
Unfortunately the news is not so good for Trent McKenzie, with the club opting to take a no-risk approach with the 22-year-old half-back following hamstring tightness.
Tom Lynch will captain the team this weekend.
