All seven of the Gold Coast SUNS Indigenous players featured in the club’s last practice match against Collingwood, and should they all win round one selections, the GC SUNS will equal  the record for the most Indigenous players in the one team.

It has been almost eleven years since Fremantle selected seven indigenous players in their team. The Dockers played Des Headland, Jeff Farmer, Antoni Grover, Roger Hayden, Steven Koops, Troy Cook and Dion Woods.

Now, the Gold Coast’s Jarrod Harbrow, Harley Bennell, Steven May, Brandon Matera, Timmy Sumner, Jack Martin and Sean Lemmens have the chance to help write the next chapter in our proud game, and GC SUNS coach, Guy McKenna, says if they do, it will be based on the strong form they have shown over the pre-season.

''They're all in with a chance - a big chance, based on what we've seen them all do in the pre-season,'' McKenna told The Age.

''We're not going to pick them because we're looking to break any records. But they're all in good form, and they've all got good fitness.

''We know it's going to be on in the first round. It's going to be a quick game, and intense game, a tough game. They're all here to help us win games like that.''

A couple of teams have come close to replicating the feat, but none have been able to.

What has pleased McKenna most has been how each of his seven indigenous stars have found their way onto the Gold Coast’s playing roster.

Harbrow has been a significant pick-up for the GC SUNS young midfield after signing on as an uncontracted player from the Western Bulldogs, Steven May was one of the first players snared through the club’s priority zone selections and exciting forward Matera was one of the original 17-year-old access picks.

Bennell was swooped on with pick No. 2 in the Gold Coast’s inaugural draft year, while South Australian Sumner was one of the great finds of the 2012 draft after being taken with pick 55.

And while newecomer Lemmens has been one of the more impressive players on the training track, it has been Martin who has stolen the spotlight for the club’s first-year players, with many fans across the country itching to see him light up the big stage.

However, should one or more of the GC SUNS Indigenous miss out on senior selection in round 1, McKenna is confident that all seven players will take to the field together in 2014.

''They're all important players for us, we’re going to need them in there at some point.''
