Champion Data runs the ruler over the Gold Coast SUNS at the half-way mark of the 2014 AFL Premiership season.

THE GOOD

While the scoring has dropped across the competition, Gold Coast has managed to add another goal to their points for averaging 93.7 points per game – ranked fourth in the competition. They rank sixth in the competition for time in forward half after ranking 16th last season, generating the fourth most forward half turnovers in the competition.

THE BAD

The Suns rank 12th for points against – the lowest ranking of the top eight teams. On average they have 14.3 fewer disposals than its opposition – ranked 14th. In their losses they average 16 fewer contested possessions than the opposition and 46 fewer disposals.

GAME STYLE

Coming out of defence they use hands in tight and then kick the ball forward and long. They kick it long 38.6% of the time which is ranked No.1 in the competition. Of their total score, 43% of their scores have come from clearances – the second highest percentage in the competition.

THE IMPROVER

Apologies to Brandon Matera, Steven May, Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Lynch but David Swallow is the most improved. He now ranks in the above average categories in disposals, contested possessions, intercept possessions, clearances, goals and metres gained for a midfielder, while ranking in the elite for score assists.
