David Swallow is expected to overcome a lower leg injury and be passed fit for Saturday’s match against Carlton, high performance manager Stephen Schwerdt believes.

The polished midfielder suffered a knock to his left calf during the opening term of the SUNS’ 53-point win over the Saints, competing hard for most of the contest before being subbed out of the match in the final quarter.

But all signs are looking positive ahead of the side’s crucial game against the Blues, with Schwerdt telling goldcoastfc.com.au the star midfielder’s injury had shown continued improvement since Saturday.

“David did a pretty good job to get through the game – obviously got a complaint in his knee, (and) got through the game considering he did get subbed out but he recovered pretty well,” Schwerdt said.

“He’s a lot better than he was post game, and if he continues that improvement we’ll test him later on in the week.

“We think he is a pretty good chance to be available this week.”

Key defender Trent McKenzie made a successful return to football last weekend, and rookie Kade Kolodjashnij could be ready to do the same according to the club’s chief fitness man.

“Kade is quite an elite athlete, and like Trent goes about his footy and capabilities the same,” he said.

“He’s done all the necessary work in regards to rehabbing his hamstring.

“He’ll train with the main squad tomorrow, and should he get through that he’ll put his hand up for selection, so we’re confident he will be right to go.”

Unfortunately the news isn’t so good for Andrew Boston, with the rookie forward facing at least a month on the sidelines after sustaining a lateral sprain to his left ankle.

It’s an untimely setback for the Gold Coast product. He recently made his long awaited return to football following extensive surgery to his right ankle, and was on the verge of finding form and fitness with the Gold Coast SUNS NEAFL team.
