Gary Ablett has been awarded his eighth consecutive All-Australian jumper, further cementing his status as one of the AFL's all-time greats.
Despite missing the final seven rounds through to season-ending shoulder surgery, Ablett's selection into the honorary team came as no surprise.
The Gold Coast midfield maestro was in career-best form before his premature finish to 2014, averaging 32 disposals and kicking 24 goals in sixteen senior matches.
And despite being cruelled by injury at the back-end of the season, Ablett's sensational first-half campaign has the superstar in with a chance of adding a third Brownlow medal to accomplished playing career.
He joins Robert Harvey, Mark Ricciuto, Gerard Healy and Greg Williams in an elite group of players that have achieved the honour eight times.
General Manager of Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft told goldcoastfc.com.au Ablett’s latest accolade was a significant celebration for the club.
“Remarkably, Gary took his game yet against to another level this year, and although wasn’t able to complete the season, still showed his continued growth as arguably the game’s best midfielder,” Ashcroft said.
“As our club captain, he continues to lead our playing group both on and off the field, with his preparation to training and recovery setting an elite benchmark for our young talented playing list.”
“It’s rewarding to see his extraordinary output has once again been recognised by the All-Australian selection committee.”
