More than 38,000 celebrated as the Foo Fighters rocked Metricon Stadium in December 2011, the concert sending a strong message to artists and promoters around the world that the Gold Coast was now home to a state of the art outdoor concert venue.

It was the perfect launch for the Gold Coast SUNS as they ventured into non AFL business for the first time, the smoothly run event leading to enquiries from a number of internationally recognised artists, with some of those discussions ongoing.

In January 2014, Metricon Stadium will host it’s first music festival with the 20th anniversary Big Day Out set to relocate to Metricon Stadium and the surrounding Carrara precinct.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO Travis Auld saying the announcement is a significant boost for the GC SUNS whom operate Metricon Stadium, but more importantly for the Gold Coast economy following initial fears the annual event could be lost to Brisbane or Northern New South Wales.

“We are absolutely delighted with  the announcement that Metricon Stadium has been chosen as the new home of the Big Day Out on the Gold Coast for at least the next five years. We are confident the outstanding facilities our venue has to offer combined with the parkland of the broader Carrara Precinct make it an ideal location for this event whilst providing a significantly enhanced experience for those attending.”

Auld adding that the announcement was just reward for the Club’s stadium team who spent considerable time working with Gold Coast City Council, State Government and BDO Management to secure the event for the Carrara precinct.

“We are certainly excited by the opportunity to further demonstrate the full capabilities of Metricon Stadium beyond hosting AFL Premiership matches and we look forward to partnering with the Big Day Out team to deliver an outstanding event for all Gold Coasters.

Metricon Stadium is a fantastic community asset which  has been recognised as the #1 venue for fan experience in the AFL two years running. We’ve  also successfully demonstrated our ability to host major concerts and look forward to delivering a first class Big Day Out event which we feel will  further highlight the venue’s suitability for festival  fans for many years to come.”

The sprawling 2014 event will be held on the Metricon Stadium playing surface, and across the fields adjacent to the Clubs current administration base within the Carrara sports precinct.

Auld saying the partnership with Council had resulted in a fantastic community outcome.

“We would like to thank the Gold Coast City Council for their co-operation and assistance in ensuring the Carrara Precinct was available for the Big Day Out event.”
