Drawing the curtain on the third annual 2XU High Performance Camp, GC SUNS conditioning staff organised a gruelling final day of training for the entire playing list – an interval circuit race, known as The Seven Deadly Sins.

After fourteen days of hard-running and physical conditioning at Flagstaff’s energy-sapping altitude camp, the Gold Coast SUNS turned in their final day of training, completing five physically-challenging exercises in seven minute intervels.

Push-ups, medicine ball throws, chin-ups, rowing and high-intensity cycling tested the players physically, with the altitude still a significant factor in the player’s results and time trials.

Acting Captain of Team Dependable, Daniel Gorringe led from the front in the absence of nominated skipper Rory Thompson, doing his best to rally teammates Greg Broughton and Henry Schade during the ring of athletic workouts.

“I’m part of Team Dependable. Rory was the captain but because he is not here (surgery) I will be takeover skipper for the team challenge,” Gorringe said.

“I think we can give the push-ups a crack, but being low on numbers it will be pretty hard.

“We’ll certainly give it a good go.”

GC SUNS Conditioning Coach – Max Kennedy, said the endurance aspect of the circuit race was a great test of strength for the players.

“They’ll certainly be puffing by the end of the seven minutes, that’s for sure,” he said.

Many of the Gold Coasters including 27-year-old defender Broughton echoed the same sentiments.

“The first half of that I found pretty easy, but because of the altitude it started to get you on the second half.”
