Harley Bennell will be in the mix for senior selection this week after the Gold Coast SUNS youngster missed the side’s clinical 44-point victory over the GWS Giants on the weekend.

After a fantastic pre-season campaign, which included a Polly Farmer Medal for his best-on-field performance in the All Stars clash, the 20-year-old sustained a minor hamstring strain in the team’s 2-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in the bi-annual QCLASH at Metricon Stadium.

But after spending the past two rounds on the sidelines, Bennell is expected to get be passed fit at Wednesday’s main training session and earn a recall to the senior team that will go head-to-head against the Fremantle Dockers on Saturday night.

GC SUNS General Manager of Football Operations – Marcus Ashcroft, told goldcoastfc.com.au that the club was expecting Bennell to return to the football action this week.

“Harley has recovered well from his hamstring strain and we believe he will be in the mix for a return this week,” said Ashcroft.

“We’d expect him to get through training on Wednesday and envisage that he will be fit and ready to go against the Dockers.”

Meanwhile, Liam Patrick is a chance to return to football through the NEAFL this week after sustaining a high-grade hamstring strain during the team’s gruelling pre-season training camp.
