The honour of being the inaugural captain of the Gold Coast SUNS will always be a tenure Gary Ablett will treasure when he eventually closes the curtain on his illustrious playing career.
In this week’s special SUNS TV Player Feature, Ablett opens up about the captaincy and his on-going work with the club’s emerging leadership group.
“It’s an honour to be captain of the Gold Coast Football Club and I’m going to be honoured to continue in the role for as long as I can, but overtime I want to develop these boys as football players but also as leaders,” Ablett said.
“As soon as one of these young boys is ready to step into the captaincy role I’ll be happy to step down, if that means that’s better for our team and help us move forward.”
Future stars Dion Prestia, David Swallow and Tom Lynch are being touted as potential successors to SUNS throne when the champion midfielder feels the time is right with Ablett saying the trio have made tremendous strides on-and-off the field since arriving on the tourist strip.
“A couple of young guys have stepped into the leadership group this year and are doing a fantastic job.
“They’re really starting to understand the demands of AFL football, how hard you have to work and what you have to do to win a Premiership.”
