Two weeks ago Gary Ablett passed his legendary father’s games record, now the champion midfielder will make history alongside the AFL Hall of Famer as the two become just the fifth pair to reach 500 games as father and son.

From being the “son of” to simply Gary Ablett, Junior has gone on to produce an equally-impressive career filled with team accomplishments and personal success.

Six consecutive All-Australian selections, four AFLPA MVP Awards, two Premierships and a Brownlow – with national betting markets already paying out punters, assured the star on-baller will be taking home his second “Charlie”.

Not bad for a guy yet to reach his twilight years.

Due to play his 252nd game this week, Ablett has been in career-best form this season – averaging 31 disposals and six clearances per game.

And after being kept unusually quiet against Port Adelaide and Melbourne, expect the team’s inspirational leader to explode against St. Kilda at Etihad Stadium this weekend.

Regardless, with Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia winning more of the contested football around the middle, the keys to the team’s midfield are in in capable hands.

Speaking to goldcoastfc.com.au in the lead-up to his 250th milestone match, the celebrated footballer said he was enjoying taking a ride in the passenger seat as he watches his fellow midfielders in crime stamp their mark on the competition.

“It’s exciting for me and I want to just keep playing footy and keeping looking after the body,” he said.

“Hopefully we can have some success with this club in the near future and continue building towards something special.”
