Club Champion Awards Ceremony | Preview

Will inaugural winner Gary Ablett make club history and collect his third consecutive Club Championship Award, or will Dion Prestia cap off his breakthrough season to be crowned the Gold Coast’s best and fairest! Consecutive top 5 finishes see’s Danny Stanley back in the awards mix, while Jaeger O’Meara’s super impressive debut season may see the Rising Star favourite rewarded with the highest Club accolade.

Player’s Player Award

A new award in 2013, and presented to the player who was most voted by his peers after 23 rounds of competition for his ability to best play his role for the team.

Gold Coast SUNS Community Award

Presented to the player who demonstrated their dependability and commitment to the Club’s core community programs.

AFL Indigenous Ambassador Jarrod Harbrow’s continued drive behind the No Boundaries program took on new life in 2013, while Karmichael Hunt and Joel Wilkinson’s work in the multicultural space stand out for mine. Tom Lynch joined on as a Youth Homeless Ambassador alongside Jared Brennan, and was on hand to help launch the 2nd annual Youth Homeless Golf Day at Royal Pines Resort.

HOSTPLUS Most Professional Award

Presented to the player judged most professional by the strength and conditioning staff.

Kyal Horsley took out the Award last year, but can expect tough competition this year to defend his crown. It’ll be hard to go past Seb Tape or Nathan Bock after their rigorous road back from long-term injury, while Tom Lynch and Brandon Matera will also be in the box seat with GC SUNS rehabilitation coach Max Kennedy recently praising their rehab from season-ending injuries.

Victor Sports Most Improved Award

Presented to the player judged by the match committee to have made the greatest improvement on-field.

Definitely one of the hardest to judge this season – Rory Thompson’s rise as a future All-Australian defender might be the obvious choice, but Dion Prestia wouldn’t be too far off after his stellar campaign around the centre circle. Last year’s winner Harley Bennell had a great back-end to the season, and could make a case for back-to-back awards.

NEAFL Player of the Year Award

Presented to the player judged to have made the greatest contribution at NEAFL level, by the GC SUNS Development Coaches.

Plenty of strong candidates make it hard tough to predict this category. Josh Hall, Alex Sexton, Henry Schade, Jacob Gillbee and Jackson Allen have all been consistent under Shaun Hart’s NEAFL squad.
