A combative midfielder with an uncanny ability to work his way through congested traffic quickly saw David Swallow become one of the Club’s most popular and dangerous players.
Selected with the first pick in the 2010 NAB National draft, Swallow follows fellow foundation players Trent McKenzie and Matt Shaw in reaching the 50-game milestone club against Melbourne at Metricon Stadium this weekend.
Swallow saying he’s looking forward to running out alongside housemate and fellow mid-fielder Danny Stanley, who will also be celebrating his 50th AFL appearance with the Gold Coast after previously recording five games with Collingwood.
“Yeah it’s great, a few boys have played their 50th already and to do it alongside Danny Stanley who will play his 50th for the club is good as well,” he said.
But while Swallow admits Saturday night will be special occasion for the quietly-spoken 20-year-old, he says the milestone is probably a reflection on his overall development as an AFL player.
“I don’t know if it means a hell of a lot,” he said.
“It’s probably more that familiarity of playing at AFL level and I suppose you begin to feel that comfort level the more games you play.”
“I think 50 games shows that you can play a bit of footy and that you’re ready to take that next step.”
Only a series of unfortunate injuries stopped Swallow from achieving the career milestone sooner, the former WAFL star emerging an integral part of the GC SUNS developing squad as he nears the end of his third premiership season on the Gold Coast.
It hasn’t been easy for David who says the burden carrying the No.1 Draft pick tag on his CV has at times resulted in the midfielder questioning his ability to be successful in the AFL.
“There’s times you don’t (feel comfortable), but now after a couple of years I think I’ve got the confidence in what I can do.
“I’ve had a few issues on my body and that kind of thing – still have a long way to go but it’s a nice small milestone along the way.”
For now though, the key player is focused on helping his team mates finish the season on a high – hopefully starting with a win against the Demons this Saturday.
“I think like last year the boys really want to finish the year off strong, and get some confidence going into the break.
“Hopefully we can continue to improve as a team.”
