Two of the Gold Coast SUNS most promising young players will go under the knife this week as the Clubs medical team prepare to have them ready for what will be exhaustive off and pre season campaigns for the talented youngsters.
Boom youngsters Jaeger O’Meara and Alex Sexton have been ruled at the for the remainder of the 2012 home and away season with O’Meara, set to undergo groin surgery in Sydney this week.
O’Meara has completed an individually tailored program this season after being drafted to the Gold Coast SUNS preseason.
Jaeger played in a number of the SUNS NAB Cup games pre-season after being granted AFL approval, despite not officially taking his place on the SUNS list until 2013. He also played another six games in the NEAFL for the GC SUNS reserves predominately against rival AFL reserves teams.
GC SUNS, General Manager – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the club had been aware for some time that O’Meara would require the surgery.
“Jaeger’s surgery has been on the radar for some time and following consultation with our medical team, the surgeon and Jaeger we determined that it would be in his best interests to have surgery during the back half of this season.
Undergoing the surgery now will give Jaeger every opportunity to have an uninterrupted pre-season prior to his first season of AFL football.”
Similar to O’Meara, the SUNS had been aware that Sexton would require surgery on his hip.
The 18-year-old Queenslander has had an impressive debut season. After staring in the NEAFL, Sexton made his AFL debut in Round 8 against the Western Bulldogs in Darwin. Sexton strung together six games and showed why the GC SUNS selected the AIS/AFL Academy player under the local talent access rules.
“We have been very impressed with Alex’s first season; we think he has really benefited from playing at senior level; however we also new that at some stage Alex would require surgery to repair damage to his hip.”
Ashcroft said both O’Meara and Sexton would begin rehabilitation immediately.
“Jaeger and Alex will commence their rehabilitation with our strength and conditioning team once they return from surgery and will be ready for the start of our 2013 pre-season.
There is a huge upside for the boys to undergo surgery at this time of the year.
Alex has had a real taste of senior football and understands what it takes at the highest level, and we believe the boys will benefit greatly from full pre-seasons as we anticipate them both playing significant roles for the senior team next year,” Ashcroft said.
