The Gold Coast SUNS didn't take long to get active in the Gillette AFL Trade Period.

On the opening day, the completed a trade with the GWS Giants that landed them rights to the first selection in the Mini Draft for the best 17 year old talent in the land.

The Gold Coast SUNS didn't hesitate in nominating Western Australian midfielder Jack Martin as the player they intend to select with their mini draft selection.

Mini draft sound familiar?

It's the same draft that landed the GC SUNS prodigious talent Jaegar O'Meara last year.

Coach Guy McKenna explained the GC SUNS rationale behind drafting another 17 year old.

"So you pull out of a draft to use one of your picks to get a 17 year old so you can spread your age," he said.

"You are slowly but surely spreading your age."

When the opportunity arose with our draft pick to get a 17 year old , I suppose similar to Jaegar last year, it certainly became evident after watching the tapes of Jack Martin, that he is a quality that you need to have on your list.

McKenna was delighted with the ability of the GC SUNS to be able to pick up Martin.

"Jack is an elite midfielder," he said.

He is quick, got great endurance, good hands. He is an aggressive boy; he loves to tackle. He is a will of the wisp, you wouldn't think that, but he is only going to add to our midfield and forward depth.

McKenna said the blueprint the club had used for O'Meara would be the same for Martin.

"The 12 months (Jaegar) has had developing his body, understanding our game plan and living on the Gold Coast has served him really well.

It's great thing for our club moving forward. Again we can spread our talent over different age brackets and also give Jack a 12 month lead in for his AFL career.

"I think it's going to serve Jack Martin really well."
